SPECIAL NEEDS GUIDELINES FOR TALL TIMBER CAMPERSWe believe that every child is “fearfully and wonderfully made” and precious in God’s sight, and we want every child to be able to have the opportunity to attend camp, including those who have special needs which require extra attention. “Special needs” can mean anything from physical handicaps that may limit activities, to developmental delays, or chronic conditions that require careful monitoring. It can also include emotional or behavioral concerns, which could impact the child’s relationships with authority or peers, or a recent traumatic experience. If you know your child’s physical or emotional needs may require extra attention, you may send up a special helper at no extra cost. How can I tell if my child would need extra help at camp? The normal camper to counselor ratio is about 7 to 1. The counselor is responsible for supervision 24 hours a day for the length of the camp, including ensuring safety, hygiene, getting kids to activities, spiritual guidance, and meeting personal needs. Ask yourself these questions: “If I were the counselor with my child and 6 other energetic kids all wanting my attention, would I be able to meet my child’s needs, and adequately supervise the rest of the campers?” “ Do I realistically think that a young person or adult who does not know my child would be able to handle my child’s needs and have enough left for the others?” If you answered “no” to either of these questions, then you should consider sending up a one-on-one counselor for your child.
