SPECIAL NEEDS GUIDELINES FOR TALL TIMBER CAMPERS

We believe that every child is “fearfully and wonderfully made” and precious in God’s sight, and we want every child to be able to have the opportunity to attend camp, including those who have special needs which require extra attention. “Special needs” can mean anything from physical handicaps that may limit activities, to developmental delays, or chronic conditions that require careful monitoring. It can also include emotional or behavioral concerns, which could impact the child’s relationships with authority or peers, or a recent traumatic experience. If you know your child’s physical or emotional needs may require extra attention, you may send up a special helper at no extra cost.

How can I tell if my child would need extra help at camp?

The normal camper to counselor ratio is about 7 to 1. The counselor is responsible for supervision 24 hours a day for the length of the camp, including ensuring safety, hygiene, getting kids to activities, spiritual guidance, and meeting personal needs. Ask yourself these questions: “If I were the counselor with my child and 6 other energetic kids all wanting my attention, would I be able to meet my child’s needs, and adequately supervise the rest of the campers?” “ Do I realistically think that a young person or adult who does not know my child would be able to handle my child’s needs and have enough left for the others?” If you answered “no” to either of these questions, then you should consider sending up a one-on-one counselor for your child.

Who should the one-on-one counselor be?

The best helper is someone who knows your child and their needs – someone your child trusts and is comfortable with. They should be mature and responsible, and at least 4 years older than the camper, in accord with our counselor guidelines. It could be yourself, a relative, regular babysitter, or church connection. Tall Timber sometimes has extra volunteers that we could place in your child’s cabin, however we cannot guarantee this. The best choice is for you to select someone you are confident in.

How will the helper function in the cabin group?

This helper will be placed as a second counselor in the cabin. For training or age reasons, we often have extra counselors in a cabin, so this will not be unusual. They will certainly interact with the rest of the cabin group, but will understand that their first priority is to attend to your child’s needs as they arise. They will need to fill out our regular counselor form and will be subject to a background check.

Does it cost extra to do this?

No. You will not be charged for the one-on-one counselor’s week at camp. We consider it a blessing for everyone concerned! Donations are always welcome.

What if there is a problem?

We will do everything possible to give you and your child a carefree week at camp! However, it is very important that we be able to reach you promptly if concerns arise, and that you have someone available as a back-up contact who is prepared to act of your behalf if needed.
